Fall is back in Boulder, and you can feel it. The air shifts, Folsom Field fills up, and Saturdays start to revolve around one question: where are you watching the Buffs? If you’ve got a ticket, you’re set. But if you’re staying out of the stadium this season, the good news is that Boulder County is full of great places to catch a game, and most of them work just as well for Broncos Sundays and NFL games too. I went around town and pulled together my go-to list.
1. Boulder Social is my number one pick. For me, it checks just about every box: good food, good beer, good service, and TVs everywhere you look. It’s also close enough to Folsom that on a home game day you still get some of that game-day energy without fighting for a seat in the stadium. If you want to sit down, eat well, and know you’ll have a solid view of the game, this is where I’d start.
2. The Outback Saloon brings the neighborhood feel. A little more laid-back, a little more of that classic sports-bar vibe. Good food, plenty of TVs, and an easy, casual place to settle in for a few hours. When I’m not looking for anything fancy, this is the kind of spot that just works.
3. A few Boulder classics round out the list. The Hungry Toad is probably better known as a soccer bar, but that traditional pub atmosphere makes it a great place to post up for a game, with good food and drinks to match. Backcountry Pizza is another one worth knowing: the bar itself isn’t my favorite viewing setup, but they’ve got other areas with really good TV setups, a huge beer selection, and plenty of room for a big group. Then there’s The Sink and The Attic, two longtime favorites that are perfect if you want to be closer to downtown or the Hill and make the game part of a bigger day out in Boulder.
4. The Dark Horse. As a Boulder native, I’ve watched this town change a lot over the years, and I’ll admit it makes me sad to drive by and see it gone. There was something about watching a game in there that felt uniquely Boulder. Same goes for the old Lazy Dog downtown, another one of my favorites that’s been gone for a while now. Boulder keeps changing, but I miss places like those. The rumor is the Dark Horse may reopen out in Louisville someday. I don’t think it’ll ever be quite the same as the original, but I’m curious to see what they do with it.
5. The old Harpo’s and Ralphie’s location on Arapahoe is becoming a CU-themed sports bar called BuffHouse. The plan is a bunch of TVs, beer on tap, a patio and rooftop, and plenty of Buffs memorabilia, which could make it a great place to watch a CU game. I stopped by, and it’s not quite ready to open yet, but I’ll be keeping an eye on it. Once the doors are open, I’ll have to come back and see where it ranks.
If you’re outside Boulder, I’ve got you covered too. In Longmont, my go-to is the Red Zone at the Pump House, a great sports-bar atmosphere and one of my favorite spots to catch the Buffs, Broncos, or just about anything. If you’re in Louisville, I’d point you to Mudrock’s, another solid local sports bar and a great place to spend a Saturday or Sunday. Longmont in particular is one of those Front Range towns that keeps surprising people with how much it has to offer.
If it’s a home game and you want the atmosphere without buying a ticket, don’t forget about Franklin Field, just east of Folsom. They set up a giant screen out there, so you can tailgate, stand right next to the stadium, hear the crowd, and feel like you’re part of game day without going inside.
There’s my favorite option of all: come tailgate with me. You’ll find me at Lot 308, at Broadway and Regent, just west of the planetarium. If you’re heading down, I usually recommend parking up near New Vista High School or somewhere around Baseline and walking in. At our tailgate, we’ve got good food, good drinks, plenty of music, cornhole, and a bunch of good people.
We’ve got just one rule: we might not win every game, but I’ve never lost a tailgate. We’re a short walk from Folsom, everybody’s welcome, and if you want to join, just reach out and let me know you’re coming so I can plan for you.
I’m genuinely excited for this Buffs season, and if there’s a favorite spot in Boulder County I missed, whether it’s for the Buffs, the Broncos, or your NFL team, put it in the comments. I want to hear about it. SKO Buffs!
